The Post I’ve Needed to Write for a While…

If you follow this blog at all, I have clearly been pretty M.I.A. this year. I had a pretty rough first half of 2016 – I tried to continue blogging from time to time, but my creative energy had been pretty zapped by a pretty terrible job situation. For being a generally confident, happy person, I can say that I have never been pulled so low as I was from December of last year through June of this year. I won’t go into details, but by the end of it, I felt stripped pretty bare.

But then I quit. Without a new job lined up, I prayed a LOT, asking God for guidance and if He COULD just MAYBE have me a new job by August 1, that would be wonderful. I had an incredible amount of peace during this time, and amazingly, on August 1, I got the call at 8:03 a.m. with my new job offer. Since then, the rest of the year has gone MUCH smoother. I’m finally feeling more my old self again, confidently working in a fabulous team environment, spending time outside of work with friends, getting back into a workout routine…the second half of the year has been SO much better.

Yet, as you’ve seen, there haven’t really been any posts. I’ve been cooking, decorating, sewing…but I just haven’t had it in me to write as much. Maybe this blogging phase of my life is over. Maybe I’ll revive it down the road. But the experiences of the year have made me care more for my friends, my family, my activities…and a little less about documenting every moment. The only place I post much these days is over in IG (@megstermeter), but I have definitely downsized my overall social media presence. I encourage each of you to really consider what is most important to you, and what is keeping you from loving those important pieces of life. Is there a job you need to quit? A relationship you need to repair? What can you do in 2017 to have your best life? I’m considering these questions for myself as the year ends.

As a “goodbye for now,” I can’t resist sharing some of my favorite pictures (in random order) of the last eight blogging years, as I welcome in this new 2017. I mean, TWENTY-SEVENTEEN, am I right? I remember December 31, 1999, in my friend Laura’s basement, singing “I’m Blue” by Eiffel 65…yikes. I am optimistic about 2017 – I hope that both for you and for me, 2017 shares more laugher than tears, more joys than sorrows, and more gratitude than complaining.

Because Brunch.

Y’all know I love a good brunch. I ESPECIALLY love hosting a good brunch! Recently, I hosted a Sunday brunch for the ladies of my small group at church. Eight of us around my hubs’ grandmother’s table just makes me so happy!

IMG_7792I turned the usual “bar” area of the dining room into a coffee and juice bar, which really worked out well. See the flowers? Those were sent to me at work the week before by my hubby and they are still going strong and are a beautiful addition to the house!!IMG_7793

If you’ve been around my blog a while, you’ve probably also noticed my love of baby’s breath. It kind of works out that it’s one of the cheapest flowers out there, so comes in very handy when sprucing up the place for a little event like this. Sunflowers also happened to be my absolute childhood favorite – my dad and stepmom can attest to my bedroom that included a sunflower comforter, yellow walls and dresser drawers, and sunflowers stenciled EVERYWHERE.

It was a potluck brunch, but as the host I really wanted to be sure to have some main courses ready to roll. Eight people = quiche. Perfect! I made my usual recipe with a few veggies swaps, and added these mini bell pepper slices on top for a little visual prettiness.

And also bacon. And sausage.

Everyone brought AMAZING dishes, and we had such a great time just chatting about jobs, marriages, babies, etc. A very happy Sunday for all of us!

Social Media Shaming {Wrap Up}

So several of my college theater friends (and other friends) have been playing fantasy football together for the last few years. If you play fantasy football, you know that often a team could be projected at 135 points, and end up with like, 80, based on fluke underdog wins, injuries, etc. And every year, we have a gmail chain going to make fun of members of our league (sometimes me) who have scored particularly low.

This year, we are upping the ante. Our first week, my friend Clare was the biggest loser with only 83 points. Meanwhile, the biggest winner was Molly with 155. Through a number of emails, the group decided that each week, the lowest scorer (now known as “The Clare”) will be faced with social media shaming, which will be chosen by the highest scorer of the week.

Make sense? Here’s the simple version.

Week 1: Clare was The Clare. She was forced to post this to facebook with the “♥ her” comment:

clare

Week 2: Ironically, Molly became “The Clare” and was required to post a selfie, in a bathroom, toilet visible, with the comment “everybody poops lol”

molly

Week 3, when I ALMOST BECAME THE CLARE, Brett actually became The Clare, and had to post a throwback photo to Vanderbilt Theater with the hashtags #tbt #college #missthis #tightiewhities… As you might could assume, it’s a VERY tighty whity picture that, no offense Brett, I’d rather not post on my blog.

Week 4, WILL is THE CLARE! What you need to know about Will is that 1) he rarely uses FB and 2) he LOVES Nashville hot chicken, particularly that of Hattie B’s. So when our friends found the following advertisement, will was forced to post to his FB page with the comment “Finally! #hattiebs #mintyfresh.”

will

Week 5, CLARE becomes THE CLARE again! It’s only fitting she should be the first to hold this title twice. Sticking with the TSwift theme, the following was posted to her FB (note the amazing caption):

clare2

Week 6, it was my husband’s turn. Lucky guy. You need to know that my husband is a HUGE cubs fan. He posted the following photo with this caption:

Big game tonight boys, I believe in you!!!! ‪#‎DoItForMark‬ ‪#‎Cubs‬

Week 7, it was Will again. A very simple:

Week 8, my time had come. This started me on a slippery downward spiral. Thank you, friends, for taking some old photos and making me feel a fool. (There was this one time, in high school, that I took a dance class and they made me participate in a recital. Shut up). My caption:

Was thinking about starting an adult version of The Ohio State University Cheerleaders I even picked out a uniform! Your thoughts? ‪#‎OhioState‬

Week 9, Alex is The Clare. She is so darn cute and has very little dirt…so this is what it came down to…

Winter is around the corner, and I can already feel my skin drying out. Thinking I better get on this… http://www.uddercream.com/ #udderbutter #feelssogood

Week 10, my hubby’s turn again! Went with a Tswifter on this one.

Can’t wait to finally take the time to read this over winter break. She’s a real inspiration. Considering cancelling my Spotify because her art IS worth paying for, no matter what the haters say. ‪#‎truth‬ ‪#‎notashamed‬ ‪#‎taylornation‬

Week 11, me again. By A LOT. You may recall this slightly out of place blog post…This was my punishment for the week.

Week 12, Alex round 2!! I had a hand in this one, and I was pretty proud of the 40+ likes she got for it. Full of all the wonderful hashtags you’d expect…

“Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness.” Following my inner moonlight with my ‪#‎starbucks‬ ‪#‎redcup‬ with a pump of ❄ ‪#‎LTD‬ ‪#‎selfie‬‪#‎coffee‬ ‪#‎justagirl‬ ‪#‎letitsnow‬ ‪#‎moonlight‬ ‪#‎madness‬ ‪#‎allenginsberg‬ ‪#‎quotes‬

Week 13, me AGAIN. But honestly, this one was not too bad. Just a silly little Elf post…

Decided to spread the ‪#‎Christmas‬ cheer a little early this year…HO HO HO!! Enjoy! ‪#‎xmas‬ ‪#‎mostwonderfultimeofyear‬ ‪#‎lovemyhubby‬ ‪#‎castsucksnot‬

Week 14, the FINAL week, thank GOODNESS. Landed on me AGAIN. So I was The Clare queen with a total of FOUR The Clares. However, due to everyone shifting attention to the playoffs, I never received a formal punishment for this. I was informed though that next year the name of “The Clare” will be changed, and aptly named after me. I guess that’s the final punishment. A shameful legacy.

Anyone else have fun wagers on the line for their fantasy league? Please share!

A Fun Wedding Weekend

In college, one of my main friend groups formed out of our campus’s Presbyterian Student Fellowship. I found this group early in my Freshman year, and I can’t begin to explain the life-long relationships I formed from it. So naturally, it’s pretty exciting when any of us have exciting life events, especially weddings when we all get to see each other!!

This year has been THE YEAR of weddings. With nine invitations, we have very sadly not been able to afford to go to all of them. Seeing friends and celebrating new marriages are two of my favorite things in the whole world, and it makes me so sad to miss some of them. Because of this, I am also grateful to be present at the ones I’m able to be present at!

Love these ladies!

This weekend also had the added bonus of being in Nashville, which is always extra fun for the Hubster and me. Just love getting dressed up with this man! Hope you all had a great weekend too!

It’s very possible that this will be me, sometime soon. My team did NOT look good last week when I lost miserably to friend Andy. So if you follow me on facebook, and something you would consider “embarassing” appears, you know why.

#winning

I write this post with a big ol’ KNOCK ON WOOD, in hopes of totally not jinxing myself. Even though I don’t even believe in jinxes. But still.

A few years ago, when my friends and I started a fantasy league, I won. I had no idea what I was doing, but I WON THE LEAGUE. It was awesome. But then nobody paid the entry fee and I got none dollars. But still. I won.

I have NOT won since. Not even close.

Well, after two weekends of football, I’m one of only two teams in my league to have a 2-0 record. YAY!! I’m enjoying it while it lasts, because as you can see below, my “points for” (PF) are not the highest by any means. As soon as I play a few high-scoring teams, I’m sure I’ll drop. So for now, loving it while I can!

Do you play fantasy football? Are you lucky at it, or do you actually know what you are doing? I’ll update you later in the season…see if I’m still riding so high and mighty 🙂
